Hats: Expressions of Creativity & Individuality

FROM THE CLOTHING & TEXTILES DIVISION

In Western culture hats reveal something about the person wearing it. They can announce where we live, who we are, what we believe or value and where we fit into our communities. Hats express an individual’s identity and place in the world.

To see hats that represent a wide variety of themes please click on the themes at the bottom.

“Once an essential part of every man and woman’s outfit, hats have gone out of fashion now except for very special occasions like weddings. It is fun to be reminded of all the symbolism they conveyed and what hats could say about the wearer. These examples are just a small portion of the wonderful collection of hats for men and women in the Museum of Texas Tech University collection.”
